Phase 2 of 7Backhand (RHBH)

Run Up

Goal: Build smooth, controlled forward momentum with a rhythmic walk-up or X-step. The run-up creates the energy your body will transfer into the disc — but only if you stay balanced.

Beginner Tip

Try throwing from a standstill first. Once you can throw smoothly without any steps, add the walk-up.

Key Actions

  • Use a smooth X-step (your back foot crosses behind your front foot) or a simple walk-up.
  • Keep your steps short and your center of gravity low — bend your knees slightly.
  • Match your tempo to a comfortable walking pace; speed comes from technique, not fast feet.
  • Keep your upper body relatively still — don't start your reachback yet.

Focus Points

  • Your head should stay level — no bouncing up and down with each step.
  • Focus on moving smoothly toward the target, not on moving fast.
  • Your weight should feel balanced over the balls of your feet.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sprinting or taking huge strides — more speed in the run-up rarely means more distance.
  • Bouncing up and down with each step, which wastes energy and throws off your release height.
  • Starting your reachback too early before your feet are in rhythm.

Head & Gaze

Softly focus on your target line. Your head turns naturally with your body as you step, using peripheral vision. Don't force your eyes to stay locked on one spot.
