Phase 6 of 7 — Backhand (RHBH)
Release
Goal: Let the disc rip out of your grip cleanly as your arm fully extends on the target line. A well-timed release with the correct nose angle determines whether the disc flies far and straight.
Beginner Tip
If your discs always fly upward and stall out, your nose angle is up. Try tilting the leading edge down slightly in your grip.
Key Actions
- Let your forearm extend fully, accelerating the disc to its peak speed.
- Allow your wrist to unhinge naturally, adding the final burst of spin.
- Let the disc rip from your fingers — don't consciously open your hand.
- Release the disc out in front of your body at the point where your arm naturally extends toward the target.
Focus Points
- The leading edge of the disc should be angled slightly downward (nose down) — this prevents the disc from ballooning up and stalling.
- The disc angle (hyzer or anhyzer) should match your intended shot shape.
- Your eyes should be on the target line at the moment of release.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Looking away or flinching before the disc leaves your hand.
- Deliberately opening your hand to release — the disc should be pulled out by centrifugal force.
- Releasing late (too far past your front foot) or early (beside your body), which throws off line and angle.
Head & Gaze
Your eyes are now looking toward your target and the release point. Your head is aligned with your throwing plane and facing forward naturally.
